Vaniqa

Vaniqa is a form of medicinal cream for women to remove excessive facial hair, which some find embarrassing or harmful to their self-image. Vaniqa cream is used to treat the condition known as hirsutism, which a lot of women can experience at some point in their lives. The condition often causes hair growth in places that are unusual for women such as the chin or upper lip, caused by imbalanced hormone levels. When using Vaniqa, it can take around two months before it starts to show any effect and it only prevents the growth of new hair. It does not remove hair that is already there. Vaniqa is a topical cream which will only provide treatment to the area to which it is applied, meaning there is no risk of widespread hair loss.

Product Description

How does Vaniqa cream work?

Vaniqa cream contains the active ingredient, eflornithine hydrochloride, which blocks enzymes necessary for normal hair growth. The enzyme blocked is called, ornithine decarboxylase and it is to be found inside hair follicles.

By disrupting the enzyme so crucial in allowing hair growth, patients who use Vaniqa cream can go about their daily lives without having to worry about the presence of excess hair.

How do I use Vaniqa?

This cream should always be used in the way your GP has instructed. You can check with your doctor or pharmacist if you’re ever unsure about how to use Vaniqa properly.

The treatment needs to be applied twice a day, with a gap of at least 8 hours between each application. Prior to using the cream, clean and dry the areas of skin where it is to be used. Apply a thin layer of cream and thoroughly rub it in until no visual residual cream remains. Wash your hands when you’ve finished applying the product.

If at all possible, do not wash the areas of skin where the cream has been applied for at least 4 hours. It’s possible to have make-up or sunscreen on areas where Vaniqa has been used but try to wait at least 5 minutes after applying the cream before using these things in the same areas. You should also wait at least 5 minutes if you have used another hair removal method (including shaving) and want to use Vaniqa on the same area.

It may take 8 weeks before you see results, so it’s important to keep using the cream daily. If you do not see an improvement after 4 months, stop using this medicine and contact your GP for advice. If you experience irritation, stinging or burning sensations, from using Vaniqa, reduce its use to once a day until the irritation has gone. If it does not, then speak to your doctor.

What are the side effects of using Vaniqa?

Like all medications, Vaniqa cream may have side effects, but not everyone is affected by them. Some of the most common side effects are:

  • Acne
  • Itchy and red skin or a rash
  • Irritated skin and possible bumps on the skin if shaving has recently occurred
  • Dry skin
  • Hair loss
  • Inflammation around the hair shaft
  • Stinging, tingling or burning feeling on the skin

Other side effects, some of which can be more severe, are possible but rare. You should speak to your pharmacist or doctor as soon as any side effects occur. If you think you may be having an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the hands and face or difficulty breathing contact a doctor or visit a hospital immediately.

It’s important to not get Vaniqa in your eyes or the inside of your nose or mouth. If you accidentally get this cream in these areas, rinse thoroughly with water.

Is Vaniqa suitable for me?

Vaniqa is designed for women aged 18 or over and who suffer with excessive facial hair. However, even if this applies to you, your medical history and other medications may mean Vaniqa cream isn’t suitable for you. You should avoid this treatment if:

  • You have a pre-existing allergy to eflornithine or any of the other ingredients contained in the patient information leaflet
  • You are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or are breast-feeding
  • You are below 18 years of age

To make certain it is safe for you to use Vaniqa, you should speak to your GP before using it, especially if:

  • You have liver or kidney problems
  • You suffer from PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) or specific hormone producing tumours (if your facial hair growth is occurring due to such a condition)
  • You take medications which can induce hair growth as a side effect for instance, minoxidil, cyclosporine, or glucocorticoids
