Product Description
How does EllaOne work?
EllaOne contains an active substance called Ulipristal acetate which acts by changing the activity of the natural hormone called progesterone within your body. This natural hormone is necessary if ovulation is to happen. This medication works to postpone the process of ovulation.
What are the benefits of using EllaOne?
EllaOne can prevent unwanted pregnancies from occurring when taken after unprotected sex.
How to use EllaOne:
When using EllaOne you should always follow the instructions and directions given to you by your doctor or on the patient information leaflet.
Take one tablet orally as soon as possible and no later than 5 days after sexual intercourse. This tablet can be taken at any point during your menstrual cycle, and at any time of the day.
EllaOne should only be taken as an emergency contraceptive and should not be used as a regular form of contraception. If you need to take the tablet more than once within the space of a month, you should speak to your doctor about other forms of contraception, preferably long-term options.
If you have unprotected sex after using EllaOne, it will not stop you from becoming pregnant. It is not a form of regular contraception. After you take the tablet and until your next period comes, you should use condoms every time you have sex.
Dosage:
EllaOne comes as a single 30mg tablet that contains Ulipristal acetate and should be used on a one-off occasion as soon as possible after unprotected sex.
If you suffer from vomiting or diarrhoea up to 3 hours after taking the medication, you should take another one as soon as possible. It is common for your period to be late after taking EllaOne, but if it is late by more than 7 days you should take a pregnancy test to check if you are pregnant.
Side effects of EllaOne:
Like any other medicine, EllaOne comes with the risk of side effects, but not everybody will experience them. Some of the side effects that this medication can cause are more common than others, but if you suffer any side effects which cause concern, you should get in touch with your GP or doctor as soon as possible. Some side effects include:
- Nausea
- Headache
- Back pain
- Muscle pain
- Dizziness
- Mood swings
- Abdominal pain
There is some evidence to note that this medication may not work as well if the woman who takes it has a higher BMI, but these data were limited and inconclusive. Therefore, EllaOneis still currently suitable for all women, regardless of their BMI.
Who can and cannot use EllaOne?
EllaOne, like many other medications, can interact negatively with some medications and health conditions. If you take any medication for the following, you should also avoid EllaOne:
- Medications used for treating epilepsy
- Medications used for treating HIV
- Medications used for treating tuberculosis
- Medications containing St Johns warts
- Medication called cyclosporin
- Medications used to treat fungal infections
You should also avoid using EllaOne if you are already pregnant, or suspect yourself of being. However, there is no evidence that if you take this medication while pregnant that it will have any effects on your pregnancy, but it is still recommended that you should get in touch with your doctor or GP.
If you take EllaOne whilst breastfeeding, you should not breastfeed your baby for one week after taking the medication. During this time, you should use a breast pump to pump milk so you can maintain milk production, but throw the breast milk away.
If you are currently taking other forms of regular hormonal contraception, EllaOne may make regular hormonal contraceptives, like pills and patches, temporarily less effective. If you are currently taking hormonal contraception, continue to use it as usual after taking the tablet, but be sure to use condoms every time you have sex until your next period.
