Product Description

How does Levonorgestrel work?

Levonelle 1500 contains a synthetic hormone substance which is called Levonorgestrel, hence why it is sometimes called this. This medication prevents about 84% of expected pregnancies when taken within 72 hours after sex. Levonelle 1500 works by preventing the ovaries from releasing eggs and preventing sperm from fertilising any eggs that have been released previously.

How to use Levonelle 1500:

When using Levonelle 1500, you should always follow the advice given to you by your doctor and the guidance on the patient information leaflet given to you with the medication. Tablets should be taken as soon as possible, and preferably within 12 hours, and no later than 72 hours after intercourse. Levonelle 1500 can be taken at any time during your menstrual cycle, but should always be taken with water and food.

Levonelle 1500 should only be taken as an emergency contraceptive and should not be used regularly. If you use more than one tablet during your menstrual cycle then it is less likely to work and more likely to damage your period. If you need to take the tablet more than once within the space of a month, you should speak to your doctor about other forms of contraception, preferably long-term options.

If you use a regular contraceptive pill, and then use Levonelle 1500, you can use the regular contraceptive pill at your normal time afterwards.

If you have unprotected sex after using Levonelle 1500, it will not exert its contraceptive effect, meaning that it will not stop you from becoming pregnant. You will need to consult your Doctor about an alternative.

Dosage:

Levonelle 1500 comes as a single 1500mg tablet which contains Levonorgestrel, it should be swallowed whole with water. You should use this medication on a one-off occasion and as soon after unprotected sex as possible.

If you suffer from vomiting or diarrhoea up to 3 hours after taking the medication, you should take another one as soon as possible. It is common for your period to be late after taking Levonelle 1500, but if it is late by more than 7 days you should take a pregnancy test to check if you are pregnant.

Do not take this medication with alongside another emergency contraceptive pill, as it will make the medication less effective.

Side effects of Levonelle 1500:

Like any other medicine, Levonelle 1500 comes with the risk of side effects, but not everybody will experience them. Some of the side effects that this medication can cause are more common than others, but if you suffer any side effects which cause you concern, you should get in touch with your GP or doctor as soon as possible. The most common side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Irregular bleeding until your next period
  • Tiredness
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Headaches

Some side effects can be worsened if you:

  • Suffer from late period
  • Suffer from bowel disease
  • Have a history of ectopic pregnancy
  • Suffer from severe liver problems
  • Have a history of salpingitis

Who can and cannot use Levonelle 1500?

Levonelle 1500, like many other medications, can interact negatively with some medications and health conditions. If you take any medication for the following, you should also avoid taking Levonelle 1500:

  • Medications used for treating epilepsy
  • Medications used for treating HIV
  • Medications used for treating tuberculosis
  • Medications containing St Johns warts
  • Medication called cyclosporin
  • Medications used to treat fungal infections

You should also avoid using Levonelle 1500 if you are already pregnant, or suspect yourself of being. However, there is no evidence that if you take this medication while pregnant that it will have any effects on your pregnancy, but it is still recommended that you should get in touch with your doctor or GP.

If you are breastfeeding and take Levonelle 1500 you should take the tablet immediately after nursing and then avoid nursing again for another 8 hours. This is because the active ingredient is excreted into your breast milk. Drain your milk and throw it away to maintain milk production until the 8 hours have passed.
