Product Description

What is Betamethasone cream and how does it work?

Betamethasone cream contains the active ingredient betamethasone valerate which is a corticosteroid. Corticosteroids are naturally produced in the body and one of their main functions is to control inflammatory responses in the body. When the body is exposed to an allergen or a trigger, the immune system releases inflammatory chemicals that will cause irritation in the skin. Corticosteroids prevent skin cells from releasing the inflammatory response and therefore reduce the swelling, redness and itching of skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

How to use Betamethasone cream:

You should always take care when using topical steroids and follow the instructions given to you by your doctor. Before applying Betnovate cream, you should ensure that the application area is clean and dry, you can then apply a thin layer of the cream on the area once or twice a day.

Over time, this dosage can be increased or decreased depending on the results it produces. Your doctor may suggest using a dressing or bandage over the cream but this should not be done unless they recommend it as it increases the amount of absorption which could be bad for mild cases of psoriasis or eczema. After applying the cream wash your hands thoroughly to avoid applying the cream to areas that do not need it.

Avoid getting the Betnovate cream in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If it accidentally gets applied to these areas, immediately rinse with cold water. Betnovate should not be applied to the face unless instructed by your doctor.

Betnovate Cream Dosage:

Apply a thin layer of Betnovate cream to the affected area once or twice a day for up to four weeks, until improvements are observed. How often you apply to cream should be reduced after the fourth week.

Side effects of Betnovate Cream:

Like any other medicine, Betnovate comes with the risk of some side effects, but not everybody will experience them. Some of the side effects that this medication can cause are more common than others, but if you suffer any side effects which cause concern, you should get in touch with your GP or doctor as soon as possible. Some side effects include:

  • A rash
  • Dry skin
  • Itchiness
  • Inflammation
  • Burning sensation in the applied area
  • Pain in the applied area
  • Allergic reaction
  • Stretch marks
  • Noticeable blood vessels
  • Hives

Whilst some of these side effects may look alarming, it is very unlikely that these will happen to you. The most likely side effect is skin irritation or itchiness, and these are normal to experience, but if these side effects get too intense you should stop using Betnovate.

Who can take Betnovate cream?

Adults and children over the age of 1 year old who have been diagnosed with eczema, psoriasis or dermatitis can use Betnovate. As Betnovate is a type of steroid, it should only be used when your symptoms are severe, if it is at risk of infection, or if emollients alone are not working and have no effect and the symptoms are becoming unbearable and uncontrollable. Some mild cases will be treated by other medicines and then moved onto steroid creams if they do not improve.

Who shouldn’t use Betnovate cream?

There are a lot of reasons that a person shouldn’t use this treatment or may not be suitable for this treatment. Topical steroids should always be used with care and those who are not suitable for this treatment should avoid using Betnovate cream.

You should always consult a doctor or GP before using this medication to determine your suitability and your recommended dosage. Medicine is usually not suitable if it interacts with other drugs, worsens someone’s condition or causes complications to someone’s condition. You should also avoid Betnovate if your breastfeeding, pregnant or planning to get pregnant.

Betnovate cream is not suitable for children under the age of one. Those who are allergic to Betnovate’s active ingredient – betamethasone – should not use it.

It is not recommended that you use Betnovate cream while you are pregnant unless you have been advised to by a medical professional. Your doctor or GP may feel that it is suitable for you to use the cream, but you may have to minimise the portions that you are using. If your doctor has recommended using this medication while you are breastfeeding then you should avoid using it near your breasts to try and avoid the substance coming into contact with your child.

Health conditions and Betnovate cream:

Always ask a doctor before using Betnovate cream to ensure that it is the correct treatment for you. As with all medicines, if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Betnovate you should avoid using the cream. In the case of an allergic reaction to Betnovate cream then you should immediately stop using it and contact your GP.
