Product Description

What is Naproxen and what does it treat?

Naproxen is a medication that usually comes in tablet or capsule form which is used to provide pain relief from various different ailments. The medication belongs to a group of medicines called Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID’s).

Naproxen isn’t only used for pain relief, but can also be used to reduce swelling and inflammation and to bring down the core body temperature. This can also be used to relieve pain that is associated with arthritis and sciatica, but can also be commonly prescribed to treat short term pain, such as migraines, headaches, period pain, and toothache.

This treatment can also be prescribed in cases of sprains and strains of muscles and bones.

How does Naproxen work?

Naproxen works by blocking the body’s production of certain natural substances that are known to cause inflammation. This medication also inhibits the production of XOC enzymes and also temporarily prevent the release of prostaglandins from the body.

Naproxen compared to other pain medications:

Naproxen and ibuprofen are both part of the NSAID’s group, but are mainly different due to the fact that ibuprofen is a short acting drug, while Naproxen is long acting. This means that Naproxen is a more suitable option when dealing with cases of long term and severe pain. However, if you are looking to treat pain that does not require long term pain relief, then it is recommended that you use a short-term medication like ibuprofen, as the long acting medication is more likely to cause side effects if not needed for long amounts of time.

When comparing Naproxen to paracetamol, Naproxen is mainly more potent and acts for longer amounts of time. It is possible to use Naproxen and paracetamol at around the same time, and you can also use Naproxen with opioid type painkillers such as co-codamol, codeine, morphine, and tramadol. However, you should only take these medications together for short periods of time.

Naproxen dosage:

The usual dosage for Naproxen is to take one tablet twice a day, with or after food, but this can change dependent on what you are taking it to treat.

The exact dosage you should take of this medication depends on what you are treating, so it is important to always follow your doctor’s instructions for how much of the medication to use.

Naproxen is available in strengths of 250mg and 500mg. When using Naproxen to treat joint diseases, you should use between 500mg to 1000mg in one or two daily doses. For painful periods and muscle or bone disorders, you should use 500mg as your first dosage and then another 250mg every 6 to 8 hours when required. When using Naproxen for gout, the first dosage is typically 750mg and another 250mg every 8 hours until the gout has passed. The dosages for all of these medical conditions can vary based on your age and state of health.

Naproxen EC is also available as a prescription only medication. Naproxen EC is essentially the same drug as Naproxen and contains the same active ingredient, but it releases the ingredients slower, meaning the medication then lasts longer and you do not have to take as many doses in one day.

When using Naproxen, it should be used for short periods of time and for no longer than 3-5 days when using the medication for pain relief. If you are using the medication to treat fever, you should not use it for more than 3 days. Children between the ages of 2 and 12 should not use more than 1000mg of Naproxen in 24 hours. Studies have suggested that adults should also not take more than 1000mg of Naproxen within 24 hours, but for cases of arthritis it is sometimes recommended to use a maximum dosage of 1650mg within 24 hours.

Like any other medicine, Naproxen comes with the risk of some side effects, but not everybody will experience them.
