What is Fexofenadine?

Fexofenadine normally comes in tablet form and is an antihistamine that contains fexofenadine hydrochloride. Fexofenadine is an antihistamine that is used to treat the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis or hay fever.

Fexofenadine is a very effective antihistamine, especially if you have previously tried non-prescription antihistamine tablets or medicines that have not worked. Fexofenadine can be used alongside a nasal spray for hay fever and eye drops when necessary.

Fexofenadine can be used to treat hay fever in adults and children over the age of 6 years. This medication can also be used for the treatment of long-term itchy hives or a rash in adults and children over the age of 12.

Fexofenadine is a prescription only medication in the UK and cannot be bought over the counter.

How does Fexofenadine work?

Fexofenadine contains Fexofenadine hydrochloride, which is a type of non-sedating antihistamine. This medication works by preventing the actions of histamine, which is a substance that the body naturally produces in response to foreign substances in the body like pollen. Histamine acts on histamine receptor cells, causing a chain reaction that results in symptoms relating to allergies. Whilst your body is trying to protect you by making these histamines, it can cause some unpleasant symptoms and be quite uncomfortable to live with.

Fexofenadine is most commonly taken as a once-a-day tablet and can be taken with or without food, but it is recommended that you take this medication before a meal. You should always take Fexofenadine with water to avoid the tablet getting stuck in your throat.

Like any other medicine, Fexofenadine comes with the risk of side effects, but not everybody will experience them. Some of the side effects that this medication can cause are more common than others, but if you suffer any side effects which cause concern, you should get in touch with your GP or doctor as soon as possible. Some of the symptoms of Fexofenadine may actually be symptoms of the condition that Fexofenadine is attempting to treat, but you should still be aware of the potential effects that you could experience. Is Fexofenadine safe?

Most people are safe to use Fexofenadine hydrochloride despite the medication being prescription only. Not many people tend to experience adverse effects with this medication, but there are a few people that should consult their doctor before considering this medication. If you suffer with any of the following conditions, you should consult your doctor before taking:

  • Liver problems
  • Elderly
  • Heart disease
  • Allergic to any of the ingredients in the medication
  • Kidney problems

Other medications and Fexofenadine:

Fexofenadine is only known to interact with indigestion remedies that contain aluminium and magnesium. The way that your body absorbs Fexofenadine could be affected by taking an indigestion remedy with the antihistamine and it could become less effective, meaning your symptoms could still be present or even worsen in some scenarios. If you do need to take an indigestion tablet that contains magnesium or aluminium, then you should only take the medication 2 hours after you have taken Fexofenadine to give it time to absorb into your body.

Although there is only one medication that is known to interact with Fexofenadine, you should always consult your GP or doctor before taking other medications.

Can I drive when taking Fexofenadine?

Fexofenadine is generally a non-drowsy antihistamine, meaning you should be safe to drive while taking the medication. However, some listed side effects are dizziness and confusion, so always make sure you know how the medication affects you before driving. If you feel tired, drowsy, dizzy, confused, or just generally unwell, you should avoid driving until you feel better.
