What is Microgynon?

The combined oral contraceptive pill, also often known as a birth control pill or ‘the pill’, is a type of birth control designed to be taken by women orally. It is an incredibly easy pill to take. Microgynon contains a combination of oestrogen and progestogen, hence the name ‘combined’ pill. It is taken by women to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

A woman’s menstrual cycle is characterised by changing levels of sex hormones. These hormones cause the release on an egg from the ovaries and prepare the lining of the womb for possible pregnancy. Microgynon contains two types of female sex hormones – oestrogen and progestogen. These two hormones in the pills prevent a woman from getting pregnant by preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries, and by making the fluid in your cervix thicker so it is harder for sperm to actually enter the womb, and also by preventing the lining of your womb from thickening enough for an egg to grow in it.

How does Microgynon work?

Microgynon contains two active ingredients called ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel, which are synthetic versions of the naturally occurring female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone. These combined oral contraceptives work by overriding a woman’s normal menstrual cycle. These hormones prepare the lining of the womb for possible pregnancy and cause the release on an egg from the ovaries. At the end of each menstrual cycle, if the egg has not been fertilised the levels of hormones fall, which results in the shedding of the womb lining known as a period.

The daily dose of hormones you receive from the pill works by making your body think that ovulation has already occurred, preventing the egg from ripening and being released from the ovaries every month. The hormones also increase the thickness of the mucus at the neck of the womb, so it is more difficult for sperm to enter the womb and fertilise the egg. The pill also makes the womb lining less conducive for a fertilised egg to be implanted there.

The Benefits of using Microgynon:

There are several benefits to making Microgynon, including:

  • Preventing possible unwanted pregnancies
  • It is one of the most effective and reliable methods of contraception that is reversible when used correctly
  • It can help with pre-menstrual symptoms
  • It does not interrupt sexual activity
  • It makes your menstrual period regular, lighter, and less painful

Microgynon will not protect you against sexually transmitted infections, only condoms can do this.

How do I use Microgynon?

Microgynon is a monophasic pill, which means each tablet has the same dose of hormones in it. You take one pill each day for 21 days and then take a seven-day break from taking the pills. During this seven-day break, your hormone levels drop, resulting in a withdrawal bleed that is similar to your normal menstrual period. You will then start the next pack of pills after the seven pill-free days are over, even if you are still experiencing some bleeding.

Microgynon comes in a calendar pack with days of the week marked on it. This will help you to remember to take a pill every single day for three weeks, followed by a week break. To remain protected, you must take the next packet on time as long as nothing happens that will make the pill less effective, such as sickness or taking other medicines. For the most effective results, you should try to take the pills at the same time every day, which can help you to remember to take it.

Swallow each tablet whole with a drink, with or without food.

Ideally, Microgynon should be taken at the beginning of day one of your menstrual cycles, which should give you enough protection from getting pregnant immediately. There should be no need to use an additional form of contraception.

If you have given birth and are not breastfeeding, you can start taking the pill on the 21st day after giving birth. You will be protected immediately after giving birth without the need for any contraception.
